Champions League: Liverpool reach quarter-finals to make it four English sides at this stage for first time in a decade

Victory meant they were the last English side to reach the last 16, joining Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United.So does this mean a resurgence of English dominance among Europe’s elite?Well it certainly kindled memories from a decade earlier, back when England had provided four quarter-finalists for two successive seasons.The 00’s was England’s most prominent spell in the competition and is best reflected in the period between 2005 to 2009, when at least one English side had contested a final.4

A year later and the same four sides would once again reach the same stage.Liverpool faced Chelsea and the Blues emerged victorious in one of the greatest matches in Champions League history, drawing the second-leg 4-4, but winning 7-5 on aggregate.Man United saw off Porto and Arsenal convincingly won 4-1 overall against Villarreal.In the years that followed, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United and Man City have reached the quarter-finals, while Leicester, on the back of their remarkable Premier League success, also advanced to the last 16 in 2017, where they were eliminated by Atletico Madrid.4

Liverpool will hope to go one better than last season, when they were beaten in the final by Real Madrid, but the latter are no longer in the tournament, their hopes of retaining their trophy for a fourth consecutive season, dashed by Ajax.However, Barcelona and Juventus, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo remain.It won’t be easy, but this could very well be the season an English club lifts the Champions League for the first time since Chelsea in 2012.
